Ever thought what it would be like to live in a Smart Home?

Following our Sales Manager, Alan Clarke’s, contribution to writer/ builder Kevin Moran’s article in the Irish Times property supplement last week entitled “Homes of the future have arrived”, I thought it would be a good idea to focus this week’s blog article on the actual benefits of including a smart home system into the plans for your new home.

So what is it like living in a smart home?

Imaging being woken by your alarm clock, hitting snooze and by the time you rise for the day the curtains throughout your home open automatically, your alarm disarms itself, the heat is adjusted to your optimum temperature, water is ready for your hot shower, your favourite radio show is on and your freshly brewed cuppa is waiting for your arrival.

With a smart home system you can have pre-defined scenes, a “Morning” setting, a “Welcome Home” setting to greet the children when they arrive home from school or a “Night-time” setting where doors and windows are automatically locked throughout the home, the alarm is armed, your TV switches off, lights dim to guide you to your bedroom. The conveniences are endless and all done with one-touch control.

You can even set a “Holiday” scene so that when you are away your home is fully secured, your radio can come on intermittently, lights will come on in the evening, blinds can rise and fall, giving the impression that there is someone at home. You can even check in on things from the poolside in the South of Spain on your smartphone! Check you CCTV cameras, receive a text alert when someone passes your perimeter security, answer the intercom on your electric gates, the list of conveniences goes on and on.

Home Automation is about making life simpler by giving you control of the features around your home with the touch of a button. It provides improved convenience, comfort and energy efficiency, combining items such as lighting and heating control, audio visual, home cinema, security and home networking, into one easy to use interface. The popularity of home automation has been increasing greatly in recent years due to much higher affordability and simplicity of use through smartphone and tablet connectivity.

The smart homes market has been witnessing remarkable growth, mainly driven by its eco-friendly nature. Machine-2-Machine communications, product growth in Internet of Things (IOT), increasing cost of energy are the key factors driving the market growth. According to a recently published report by ReportsWeb.com entitled “Smart Homes Global Market”, the Global Smart Homes Market accounted for €24.84 billion in 2015 and is expected to reach €76.40 billion by 2022 growing at a CAGR of 17.41% from 2015 to 2022. It is estimated now that nearly 2 in 5 (40%) of new homes being built in Ireland today will have some form of Smart Home Technology included in their plans.

Companies such as Control4 and Crestron are two of the main players in the Irish, European and global Smart Homes market.

When designing your dream home, whether you are building from scratch or extending and renovating, it is important to consider the inclusion of technology. With the continued growth in usage of smartphones and mobile devices, having a strong network is fundamental to a well- connected home. With the block work and insulation that go into new builds these days you will need Wi-Fi access that will not “drop off” as you move from one room to another.

Smart Home Solutions

Technology has now reached the stage where a modern home can be equipped with the electronics to make almost every aspect of your life at home, easier and more enjoyable. Below is a list of just some of the items that can be integrated into your Smart Home:

  • Lighting
  • Heating
  • TV
  • Home Cinema
  • Multi-room Audio/Video
  • Intruder Alarm
  • Entrance Gates and intercom
  • Doors and windows
  • Household appliances
  • CCTV
  • Curtains and Blinds

In a time where our lives get busier and busier, and where it seems spare time comes at a premium, such modern conveniences as shopping, banking and even dating online allow us to cherry pick how we choose to spend our “down time”. A smart home system will deliver the optimum in secure, convenient and efficient living, saving you energy, time and money.

When you can fully control your home then that gives you the power and flexibility to run a more efficient home. How does an efficient home benefit the homeowner? It means the homeowner can save on running costs. A safer, warmer, more efficient, greener, power saving and money saving home – who wouldn’t choose to have that when renovating or building their new home?

The key reasons why home builders choose to include a smart home system:

  • Family security is critical
  • Convenience plays a big role “imagine a home that knows you are on your way home from work and has everything switched on and ready for your arrival?”
  • Protecting your valuables
  • Saving Energy
  • Saving Money on utility bills
  • De-cluttering your home of cables, boxes, remote controls, music systems and games consoles. All your technology is centrally located and all controlled from one remote or you mobile device.

With affordable smart home solutions you can control every aspect of your home with the touch of a button. When planning your new build or renovation, make sure you have your homework done on how technology can enhance and deliver the home of your dreams.
